The Demon and the Angel: Searching for the Source of Artistic Inspiration
Published in Hardcover by Harcourt (26 March, 2002)
Average review score:

Entering the nether world of inspirationFlashes of inspiration, of originality, of that conjoining of synapses that transmit creativity to the mind/eye/hand/soul of the receiver and bring forth significant art have been assigned to a Muse, a connection with some other place, always indefineable until this eloquent little book by the intoxicatingly intelligent Edward Hirsch. As erudite as this well researched book is, it is more a companion to the learning eye and mind, much like his other forays into how to read poetry, etc. Using the centuries-old concept of the "daimon" or demon as best illustrated thorugh Lorca's "duende", Hirsch spends the first half of his book drawing us into a familiarity and asks us to be vulnerable to the concept of a mysterious spirit that enters from the bowels of the earth the body of the writer, poet, musician, composer, dancer, and induces creativity. His examples and quotations from a wide range of artists are convincing. And just when we feel sure that we understand the creative source, Hirsch takes us a step further and discusses the Rilke belief that inspiration comes down from the heavens as an angel to soar through the mind of the receptive artist and provides that out of body, inexplicable touch that we call creativity. With both sources - one emerging for the bowels of the earth as a dark demon and the other descending through the firmament to transiently rest inside the soul - Hirsch addresses just what is "creativity" and how we can better find it and embrace it. This small book speaks volumes to artists and readers alike. This is not a "self help" book, but rather a source of inspiration as powerful as any canvas or poem or symphony. Read and improve your connection with art.
Elucidating the ElusiveEmploying as touchstones Garcia Lorca's consideration of duende and Rilke's concept of the angel, Edward Hirsch constructs a convincingly argued, evocative "search for the source of artistic inspiration." In lucid, forceful prose Hirsch draws illustration for his argument not only from poetry (art in words)but from all the arts. His thought-provoking investigation deepens our understanding not only of the source of artistic inspiration but also of the interrelation of the arts and their common inspirational wellsprings. His illustations and exemplifications range widely among virtually all modern artistic innovators. By coming at the question of inspiration through all the arts his discussion deepens and enriches the reader's understanding, leaving him or her enlightened and stimulated.

Description of Egypt: Notes and Views on Egypt and Nubia Made During the Years 1825-1828
Published in Hardcover by Amer Univ in Cairo Pr (September, 2000)
Average review score:

Detailed descriptions of all the ancient monumentsEdited and with an informative introduction by Jason Thompson, Description Of Egypt: Notes And Views In Egypt And Nubia Made During The Years 1825-28 is the absorbing nineteenth century account by Edward William Lane (1801-1876) of his travels along the length and breadth of Egypt. It was offered for publication in 1831 but never saw print. The manuscript was sold to the British Library by Lane's widow in 1891 and only now has been published, some 170 years after its completion. With Lane's detailed descriptions of all the ancient monuments and contemporary life that he saw during his journey, Description Of Egypt will proof an invaluable reference for students of Egyptology, Egyptian history, and nineteenth century Egyptian culture.
EVERY EGYPT-INTERESTED ONE SHOULD OWN IT!The re-edition of E.W. Lane's book is one of the most welcomed additions for the bookshelves of anyone interested in ancient and late last-century Egypt. This book, in reality, was originally published after the notes, drawings and photographs made by Lane during his journey to the Nile country between 1825-27, so that it is a mine of information about the pharaonic monuments in general and about Egypt during those years. A clear and finely written preface by the Editor, Dr. J. Thompson introduces the reader to the beautifully printed text and images; it should be noted that many of the latter were made with a camera lucida and count among the first taken with such a system. One should not be afraid by its bulky aspect: you will read from start to end without boring. The shcolarly-minded ones will regret the lack of indexes to such a huge volume: it implies that you must do the work by yourself... Simply fabulous both for the Egyptologists and the Egyptomaniacs.

Design-Build: Planning Through Development
Published in Hardcover by McGraw-Hill Professional (13 April, 2001)
Average review score:

Phenomenal resourceI am a public owner and find this book to be one of the most complete and easy to understand discussions of the design-build process that I have seen. Beard, Loulakis and Wundram are well-known industry experts and all active in the Design-Build Institute of America. They bring their years of practical experience to their writings and have a strong sense of reality. I particularly found the contract and liability chapters written by Loulakis to be very helpful. I also enjoy the other books written by Loulakis, particularly "Design-Build Lessons Learned," (2001 Edition), which has the most up-to-date analysis of design-build caselaw and is a great resource to keep up to date with this subject. I'm anxiously awaiting to see if the authors decide to come out with another book in the near future. Keep up the good work, gentlemen!
An excelent guide for design-buildersDesign-Build: Planning through Development covers most aspects of this project delivery method and is an excellent source of information for all the parties involved in the design and construcion business. Owners, Contractors, CMs and Designers can benefit from this book by obtaining guidelines and good orientation of how and when implement D-B as an effective project delivery method that is getting more followers everywhere.

The Diabetic Athlete
Published in Paperback by Human Kinetics (T) (March, 2001)
Average review score:

Very informative, a must have bookThis book is divided to two parts. The first part explains the physiology of exercise and how it relates to diabetics. It includes general chapters and chapters dedicated to type 1 and type 2. The premise of the book is that knowledge is power, so knowing what the body does during an exersice is powering you to better manage your diabetes as it relates to exercise. It also has a chapter on nutritional supplements for diabetic athletes. The second half of the book deals with specific sport activities and gives advice on how to change your nutrition or insulin regimes to better accomodate for these activities plus examples from actual athletes. I found this part to be less usefull. However the book is worth its weight in gold just for the first part and is a must have for any diabetic that considers exercise as part of his medication. The book is very well written, full of concise and clear information.
great format and adviceThe Diabetic Athlete was exactly what I was looking for. It describes the effects different sports and activities have on blood sugar and your body. Also, provides tables and advice on how to manage your glucose levels depending on sport and type of insulin being used. Great reference and easy reading.

A Dictionary of American Idioms
Published in Hardcover by Barron's Educational Series (January, 2004)
Average review score:

Excellent book to learn the way Americans speakIdioms are always difficult. For people learning English as second language this is even harder. This book offers a detail list of idioms that people often use, with their meanings and examples. Using this book along with the "NTC's Dictionary of American Slang" helps to develop your skills in understand the way American speaks that not always is taught in school. The book is clear, perfect. I'm happy to have it in my bookcase.
A very good reference for non-native English speakersI thought I knew English pretty well. But when I came to Canada and had a chance to talk to people whose first language was English, I realized that sometimes I just can't get what they mean. When someone says "I'm off the hook" what does he really mean, was he "hanging" from a hook!! After realizing that I went to a bookstore and started searching for something which would help me in this regard. Then I came across this book and after a glance, I decided to buy it. It's been more than two years and I'm still happy that I bought this dictionary. Even though I know a lot many idioms now, I still refer to this book almost daily. And it has never disappointed me!!

Digital Color Management: Encoding Solutions
Published in Hardcover by Prentice Hall PTR (06 January, 1998)
Average review score:

Stunning!I have attended several of Mr. Giorgianni's tutorials on color management in recent years and have found him to be an outstanding instructor. His book brings into focus the complex issues in color management and explains them all with unparalled insight. I'm sure that this was a very difficult book to write and produce. The authors and the publisher deserve the thanks of the digital imaging community.
This book will endure for decades as the book to beat.I am the author of eight books, and my latest one is on digital imaging. In a word, I find Digital Color Management astounding - both in scope and in clarity. The writing is superb and the material is beautifully illustrated. I believe this book clearly reaffirms Kodak researchers as a prescient within the imaging industry. My only criticism is that this book was not available while I conducted my latest research. If you are involved in any aspect of contemporary imaging technology, not having this book places you at a distinct disadvantage. Thank goodness not too many books like this come along - it is enough to give any author pause, if not despair, as to what a technical book should be.

Average review score:

Research-based how-to-teach explicit, systematic phonicsDirect Instruction Reading, gives away ALL the secrets of the designers of Reading Mastery, one of the most effective reading programs available today. The text gives ALL the details necessary to teach reading successfully. The text explains how to teach explicit, systematic phonics for beginning readers and why it is necessary. The text leads the reader through a comprehensive description of methods for every step in learning to read. From teaching how to sound out words, through learning irregular words, to fluent decoding and passage reading, the authors provide techniques of instruction all the way up to teaching children how to get the most from content-area textbooks. The text includes exactly the kind of information teachers need to be able to teach phonics, such as the most common sounds of letters, blends and sound combinations as well as how to teach students to blend, how to deal with irregular words, how to teach the magic "e" rule and countless other specifics. A comprehensive set of field-tested teaching scripts provide efficient and effective wording for teaching more than 36 common reading objectives - ranging the gamut from phonemic awareness skills to advanced story reading comprehension. Informed by years of teaching and supervising reading instruction this text has concrete suggestions for dealing with just about every problem a teacher might have in reading instruction- examples include how-to-tips for students who are not: blending sounds, paying attention, reading correctly, understanding vocabulary, reading with fluency, comprehending their reading, making adequate inferences, and so on. This book has been used as the text for the reading class in three universities in which I have taught. I have taught from it, and previous editions, for several years. I believe it is one of the most useful textbooks I have ever read. It truly teaches everything one needs to know about teaching reading. I give it my highest recommendation. Invaluable resource on effective reading instructionDirect Instruction Reading is a "must read" for any regular education or special education teacher of reading K-12. Newer teachers, frustrated because they are untrained in phonics instruction in a time when school districts are increasingly requiring them to effectively teach these skills will find this book a helpful source of reading instruction. Seasoned veteran teachers of reading who want to fine tune their instruction of both phonics and comprehension strategies will also come away with ideas and assessment that can be implemented in their classroom. Parents and school board members who have been closely following the reading debate will find this book answers many of their questions about what they should look for in effective reading instruction. Practical, research-based advice is jam-packed throughout the chapters which include sequenced sound and word lists and examples of how to incorporate content maps and other strategy guides into reading lessons. Not only do the authors specifically discuss and demonstrate how to teach phonics, how to teach vocabulary and language skills, and how to develop students' comprehension skills, but they also provide interesting and easily read chapters which discuss past and current research support for their recommendations. Direct Instruction Reading will also be valuable for middle school or high school teachers who are now expected to teach reading in addition to their subject area of science or social studies. Whenever I supervise student teachers who are expected to develop lesson plans in a content area, I have them base their lesson plans on the authors' suggestions for content area reading. The lesson plans provide such an excellent framework that that students in their classroom enthusiastically learn new vocabulary and key concepts, and the cooperating teachers are delighted with the end product. Besides presenting valuable guidance about the teaching of reading, Direct Instruction Reading also is a helpful source of information for those who have questions about Direct Instruction and what it involves. As the authors repeatedly stress throughout their book: "Reading failure can be prevented . . . by efficiently organizing instruction, carefully selecting and modifying reading material, and effectively presenting the material. Students will not only learn the reading competencies needed for success later in life, but they will also feel positive about their ability to function in society."
